Deathwing has a secret…
I doubt this is something that will be revealed in Cataclysm. In fact, I doubt it’ll ever be openly revealed at all. Virtually every great story has subtext. You may have the plot, the story at face-value, but the subtext is what’s *really* going on.
Deathwing has a secret, and while it may never be openly revealed, once you know it, a whole lot of things suddenly fall into place.
So what is it?
I believe Deathwing is in love with Alexstrasza… that beneath all the bile, fire and death, Deathwing destroyed Azeroth in a horrible misled attempt to impress her. I think that Deathwing has a deep-down problem with failure. He cannot forget he was Neltharion the Earth-Warder. He knows he failed at his original purpose, and the only way to make up for that is for him to succeed at his new self-chosen purpose. I think the rage we saw in Deathwing during his fight with Alexstrasza at Twilight Highlands was his own self-hatred for yet again failing, this time to convince Alexstrasza he was powerful enough to be worthy of her. He could have killed her, he didn’t. Perhaps he hopes she’ll come around and finally understand.
Cataclysm is ultimately a love story. And like I said, I don’t think this will ever be revealed in game. Perhaps it’s even still locked in Chris Metzen’s head, but I firmly believe it’s there. Too many things make perfect sense once that story element comes into play.

Aha, this idea has crossed my mind a few times, too.
I wish I kept better track / notes of my thoughts when I read the novels and such. I can’t remember which (I figure either War of the Ancients or… whichever the one where Alex was captured and Rhonin had to go save her) that the thought of Deathwing being obsessed with Alex came to my mind. I think it was the way he spoke to or about one of her consorts that kind of made me feel like there was an underlying petty jealousy.
Then I think there was a conversation he had with her where he said something like “We could rule this world together” or… something. I could be completely making that up, though, it’s been so long.
I guess the question in my mind is whether it’s really love. I’m not sure he’s in love with her so much as he’s obsessed. I think it’s possible he once loved her as Neltharion but that warped along with all his other emotions.
I’m also not sure I can believe everything he’s done is trying to impress Alextrasza. I honestly think he’s just nuts. But if his actions are connected to her at all, it feels like it’d make more sense that, in rejection, he’s trying to destroy the things he knows are important to her: Azeroth and the mortal beings.
Either way, it’s an interesting point and one that’s very possible in the long run. Love is ever the catalyst in a lot of things, both good and bad.
Good one.

Im pretty sure Alexstraza and Ysera were the two building blocks used by the Old Gods in order to corrupt Netharion. Whispering to him and feeding on the way he lusted after them, until it all started to take and he actually believed only he was worthy of him. That may have been around the time of the Demon Soul’s construction, wishing to use its power to subjugate the only two Aspect Dragons we won’t be killing any time soon.
I do agree with you on the why Deathwing didn’t kill Alexstraza.. he probably doesn’t even realize it himself. Remember, this is Blizz, they love conflicted villains and whatnots. Iza, wanna bet that ‘Straza turns into a weepy crybaby over Deathwing? =D

It’s very much true they’re in love, but it all depends on what happens now in Cata that determines if Deathwing will ever regonize it.
Alexstrasza seems to have vast amounts of care for Deathwing, constantly pleading him to rejoin the Dragon flights. Which she also did at the time of his betrayal in War of the Anicents, while she gave Malygos a pep speech and killed him mostly without hesitation. Yet we always see Alexstrasza hesitating…always begging.
No doubt if Deathwing dies, she’ll be depressed for many more thousands of years. There’s also the matter of Deathwing’s personality. He seems ‘evil’ but he’s never much harmed Alexstrasza to a leathy point. Maybe fought her a bit, roughed her up but never indeed did he become the ‘Destroyer’ to her. If he was detached of all emotions and just a brutal killing machine, then he’d be more like a Chaos Lord.
Yet he’s not, he still has the emotions of Neltharion. The memorie, ec cetera. But what does this mean? This means the Old Gods will, eventually, try to break those dies or simply kill the object of the ties. Aka Alexstrasza. And then he’ll just be their fully realized pawn.
Though Deathwing still craves her, still wants her. I’d doubt he would really like the plan of killing his ‘queen’ he ever so waited 10,000+ years for. There also has to be some type of remorse within Deathwing, in order for him to gain any standing with Alex in the first place.
I wonder what will happen…
Deathwing did have a thing for her yes, however if you read up on the lore you would know he was driven insane by the old gods wispering him, he betrayed the other aspects and they turned on him so wounde dhe went into hideing he eventley became deformed and begain falling apart, the twilight hammer started to restore him with metal hence his metal jaw, he is now an insane dragon roaming the world burning everything in his path.
And what, may I ask, were the Old Gods whispering to him?
And if he was driven insane to hate her, why did he always go for her instead of trying to take the world first? That’s literally his goal up until Day of the Dragon, which he more so wants her eggs to obtain a flight once more.
Yet in Cataclysm, he still tries to court her…and she creates a Jihad.
Total rubbish. The only reason DW exists is that we could farm him each week and get some EPIXZZZZZZZZZZz.
i agree with PS at least in part, the curruption in deathwing, makes his love turn into a need for her eggs, to create his own powerful dragon flight. i am still trying to keep up with he lore as i am new to wow. But how this unfolds so far is really interesting.
Very interesting I totally agree with this
But,aren’t the two of them related?they refer to each other as brother and sister in twilight highlands
I’ve wondered about this too. Ysera and Alexstrasza are often referred to as literally sisters. With the others though, it seems to be more a brother/sisterhood among the aspects or dragons as a whole though.
I’d hate to say it, but I think the question is ultimately moot since close relations among closely related dragons doesn’t seem to be that big of a deal in dragon culture.
