WoW Logo 2Alright, lets lay some cards on the table. What’s going to happen with WoW? Not WoW2 as we tend to discuss, but WoW.

Will we run out of characters? How many expansions will there be? How long will it go for?

The answers are, No, Five, and 2013.

Here’s the time-line with a history thrown in as well.

11/2004 - World of Warcraft released. End boss, Kel’Thuzad.

01/2007 - Burning Crusade Released. End boss, Illidan/Shade of Kil’Jaeden.

Okay, here’s where we start to speculate…

11/2008 - Wrath of the Lich King. End boss, Arthas. We also know from Metzen that there’s an Old God in the spider kingdom. You’re probably wondering how I came up with that release date. Here’s how. (more…)

Thrall and Jaina

Cycle of HatredI recently finished the book Cycle of Hatred by Keith R. A. DeCandido. It’s decent, and if you’re into books set in the Warcraft universe I’d definitely say give it a look. There’s one reason though in particular that I bring it up here. It pushes the Thrall/Jaina lore that has been lacking.

As some of the more regular readers of this site will remember, I’ve gone off in the past about Metzen hinting he’d toss out years of story-set up for some gimmicky, “Teehee, lets hook up the coolest male orc with the coolest female orc!” *Snore*

Garona as Mrs. Thrall?? Eh… What!?!

GaronaRemember Gladiator? That movie with Russel Crowe? Fun movie… won the Oscar, and had a climax that was a complete let down.

Why? Because it kept repeating the same promise throughout the movie only to completely abandon it in the third act.

What am I talking about? Russel Crowe’s army. The movie keeps strongly inferring that Russel is going to reunite with his army and storm Rome. The movie was peppered with all sorts of lines in different places…

Senator, “But… but… there hasn’t been an invasion of Rome in over 700 years!”

Russel, “Where is my army?”
Servant, “Right outside the city my liege. And they are fat… and bored!”

Awesome! An event that hasn’t happened in centuries! A cantankerous army invading Rome led by Russel Crowe! Uber-awesome!

Did it happen? NOPE!

Instead the movie pulls a 180 on you. Russel is caught trying to escape, and instead we have him, now hobbling around crippled, fighting a one on one duel with the Emperor. We don’t even get to see the hero at full strength fighting the bad guy at full strength. Yes it won the academy award. Take a look at other best picture winners though and I’d say that had more to do with Russel dieing at the end than anything else.

The fact of the matter is, from a storytelling standpoint, the ending felt like a let down. Don’t infer something over and over in your story then not follow through.

Why am I mentioning this? Because it looks like Chris Metzen is considering doing this.

It happened at Blizzcon ‘07 and it has to do with Garona, the famous half-orc, female rogue first featured in Warcraft 1.

The Underrated Centaurs of WoW

WoW - CentaursWhen it comes to loregies about WoW there’s lots of talk regarding races such as the Blood Elves, Pandaren, and Orcs. One of the most underrated races however, are the Centaur.

They have their own zone, Desolace, and they’re closer than one might realize to becoming a force to be reckoned with in the over-arching world of Warcraft.

What they need is a catalyst. And they have one. Actually… two.

Future Lore: The Dwarves of World of Warcraft 2

WoW - DwarfAs with the Night Elves, the Dwarves are also heading down the path to civil war. The reason lies in one, soon to be born, dwarf.

If one has done the quest “The Princess Saved?” on the Horde side, or “The Princess’s Surprise” on the Alliance side, then one already has an idea of what we’re talking about.

Jeff Kaplan Comments on WOTLK Lore

Tigole AvatarAs part of an interview Warcry did with Jeff Kaplan, Jeff was asked…

WarCry: Much of the Horde experience in Outland revolved around the history of the orcs and the Mag’har tribe. What races can we expect to find tied to the lands of Northrend?

Jeffrey Kaplan: Northrend has some great story development in it. Humans, dwarves, tauren, and trolls will all have their storylines developed further. Of course, all of the other races will share the spotlight as well, but those four have an especially strong presence throughout the icy continent.

Illidan - Dead?

Illidan, The BetrayerIt was a great shock to a lot of fans of WoW’s lore that Illidan actually dies when you defeat him at the end of Black Temple. This was doubly surprising when taking into account Chris Metzen at Blizzcon 2005 who said we’d only be “slowing him down”.

So there’s the question? Is Illidan really dead? Is his active participation in Warcraft’s lore over?
